Journey East Trip to China 2005

LELAND AND GRAY UNION HIGH AND MIDDLE SCHOOL — TOWNSHEND, VT 05353

Created at Leland & Gray High School in Townshend, Vermont, supported by the Asian Studies Outreach Program (ASOP) at the University of Vermont (UVM), and funded primarily through a grant from the Freeman Foundation,

Journey East, as a whole, consists of the Asian Studies Academy and Sino-American Performing Arts Exchange at Leland and Gray Union High School; the integration of an Asian Studies curriculum throughout the Windham Central Supervisory Union, and the introduction of Chinese language programs into the district.

Dr. Juefei Wang, Director of the Asian Studies Outreach Program University of Vermont, is a recipient of the prestigious Goldman Sachs Award for Excellence in International education, on behalf of the UVM, Asian Studies Outreach Program.

The Leland and Gray Journey East program is deeply indebted, and extends its heartfelt thanks, to Dr. Juefei Wang, without whose effort and support this program would not even be possible!

Thank you Juefei!

We’ve received word that the Journey East IV group has officially landed “safe and sound” in Beijing, China (Thanks Andi).

WHEW!

Their plane was even 1/2 hour early! The anticipation never gets easier.

Okay, so this is a good time to discuss, once again, the time. If you are reading this Wednesday morning, the group has not only landed in China, but they are almost finished with their day and are getting ready to close up shop and go to bed (they are 12 hours ahead). Sometimes Tom will send stuff when it is evening over there (morning here) and other times he’ll get stuff sent off first thing in the morning (the night before here). There is no consistency to any of this and I guess that’s what makes it all so exciting!

The gang should have a good rest day today, a good start to recovering from their marathon voyage across the Pacific, and will get a good night rest as they begin their journey in earnest tomorrow. You can check out the Beijing weather (thank you Andrea) to see what they are facing the next few days.

In the meantime, you can study up on Beijing. This site has everything you want to know about Beijing. I’m not kidding you, you can get lost in all the links . . .

Just so you don’t walk away empty-handed, here are some parting shots of some of the kids at the school yesterday before they left for Hartford (Thanks Andi). Seems like such a long time ago already, doesn’t it?
