China

Created at Leland & Gray High School in Townshend, Vermont, supported by the Asian Studies Outreach Program (ASOP) at the University of Vermont (UVM), and funded primarily through a grant from the Freeman Foundation,

Journey East, directed by Tom Connor, consists of the Asian Studies Academy and Sino-American Performing Arts Exchange at Leland and Gray Union High School; the integration of an Asian Studies curriculum throughout the Windham Central Supervisory Union, and the introduction of Chinese language programs into the district.

Dr. Juefei Wang, Director of the Asian Studies Outreach Program University of Vermont, is a recipient of the prestigious Goldman Sachs Award for Excellence in International education, on behalf of the UVM, Asian Studies Outreach Program.

The Leland and Gray Journey East program is deeply indebted, and extends its heartfelt thanks, to Dr. Juefei Wang, without whose effort and support this program would not even be possible!

Thank you Juefei!

Welcome to the Journey East 2008 trip to China and Inner Mongolia.

Our first journey together was in 2002. And then we followed that trip with two more in 2004 and 2005, and our most recent trip was last year, 2007. You can visit the main site at www.thejourneyeast.net. Journey East 2008 marks our fifth virtual trip to China!

This is an amazing journey and while Tom Connor and the JE 2008 gang will be experiencing China first-hand, you are going to learn a lot along the way. The days will be filled with magnificent photos, fascinating stories written by the students, and reports of the activities by the group leaders and chaperones.

Just click on the dates below as they become linked to follow the journey day-by-day.

To help guide you as to whom is speaking in the commentary, the student reporting will be in one color and the adults (leaders and chaperones) in another color. My writing will be in black. And, in case you thought you could just ride along without having to do any work, there will be a quiz at the end, so pay close attention. The quiz is worth lots of points!

Okay, everybody, buckle up tight and hold on ’cause we are about to take off on yet another fun-filled, wild and zany, information packed, thrilling , sometines wild and crazy, but often philosophical and insightful, adventure through China and Inner Mongolia!

Okay Tom, it’s all yours, let Journey East 2008 begin . . .
